5 Popular Elementary Schools in the Heights, Timbergrove, & Oak Forest Area

Norhill Realty September 5, 2019

The Heights, Timbergrove, and Oak Forest areas are in high demand for families looking for homes that are zoned to good Elementary schools. The short commutes, back yards, and family-friendly floor plans have kept these home buyers in Houston instead of heading for the suburbs. These neighborhoods have a lot to offer including excellent parks, restaurants, and entertainment, but the elementary school is often a top priority. Here's a list of the popular elementary schools located in some of the most family-friendly neighborhoods in Houston.

Harvard Elementary

Located in the heart of Houston Heights, Harvard Elementary (yep, like that Harvard) has consistently been rated one of the top Elementary schools in HISD and earned an A rating by the TEA for the 2018-2019 school year. Harvard is also recognized as an IB World School which prepares students to be active participants in a lifelong journey of learning. Additionally, Harvard is a magnet school which focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Adding to its strong rating and programs, families in the Heights love that the school blends seamlessly into the neighborhood which adds to the small-town vibe that you can't easily find in a big city like Houston.

Travis Elementary

Located in Woodland Heights, Travis Elementary is another popular Heights school that blends into the Historic neighborhood and has consistently received strong ratings. Travis Elementary is a Vanguard Magnet campus. Vanguard Programs are designed to meet the needs of "Gifted and Talented (G/T) students in grades K-12 by providing a learning continuum that is differentiated in depth, complexity, and pacing.¹  The school playground also doubles as a neighborhood park which features a dinosaur play space, rock wall, and tree-lined green space.  The historic homes, short commute to Downtown, and Travis Elementary have made Woodland Heights one of the most desirable inner-city neighborhoods in Houston.

Field Elementary

Field Elementary located on Studewood near Norhill Heights has been gaining in popularity, in large part due to its strong rating and the continued residential development in the attendance zone. The school opened in 1929 and retains a lot of its original character and charm from that time period.  A few of the popular programs include the music program and Writers in the School program. Field also features a Gifted and Talented program for its advanced students. Since a large portion of the attendance zone for Field falls outside of the Heights Historic districts, it has become a popular destination for families that are interested in new or recent construction homes.

Sinclair Elementary

Sinclair Elementary is located in the heart of Timbergrove Manor and serves families in Timbergrove, Lazybrook, and Shady Acres.  The spacious campus features two playgrounds that are shaded by the numerous trees. Families are drawn to this area for the functional ranch-style homes with great back yard space. Sinclair opened in 1959 and blends in well with this mid-century neighborhood. It is HISD's only elementary technology-based communications magnet school with a focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Some of the other popular programs are the Vanguard program, Drama & Theater, Music, and Computer Lab.

Oak Forest Elementary

Oak Forest Elementary is located in its namesake neighborhood, Oak Forest. This area has been very popular for home buyers that want to keep their commutes short, love the tall pine trees, and prefer the recently built spacious homes. The school opened in 1949 but has undergone extensive renovations in recent years.  It is a Vanguard magnet school and has consistently been rated one of the best in HISD. Oak Forest Elementary has a very active PTO that really invests in the growth and improvement of the school and all of its programs.
